Republican Liberty Caucus of SC Endorses Sean Pike for Senate District 41
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The Republican Liberty Caucus of South Carolina issued the following statement regarding its endorsement for Senate District 41:
“The endorsement for Senate District 41 has been one of the most difficult of the year. Certainly, the heritage of the seat leaves voters hoping for a true leader to fill the void left by Sen. McConnell’s departure to the Lieutenant Governor’s position.

“Each candidate has offered certain characteristics that might be attractive in this seat. Some bring name recognition, others championed specific issues of importance, and still others brandish their business acumen. For this important seat with so much history attached, the Republican Liberty Caucus believes that a real statesman is needed, and that Sean Pike is the best man for the job. Pike, a former Charleston police supervisor and Air Force medical officer, is also a board certified healthcare administrator, and currently serves as a leadership and ethics instructor at The Citadel.
“There’s no doubt that Columbia needs someone with leadership and ethics, and Sean Pike can be that leader. His background offers significant value, including a keen insight into South Carolina’s criminal justice system and the need for reform, as well as an understanding of the thorny issues surrounding healthcare that will soon be at the forefront.
“But his real strength lies in his classical understanding of government. Pike is a student of the U.S. and S.C. Constitutions. He recognizes the importance of state sovereignty, and understands the Jeffersonian ideal of limited government. In his words, ‘If it is not spelled out in the Constitution, I will always default to personal liberty.’ Those are the standards of a true statesman, and these are the days when statesmanship must trump pecuniary wishes.
“Nonetheless, Pike also understands the other key issues facing our state. Committed to serious tax reform, he stands for cutting the highest-in-the-region manufacturing property tax. He points out that ‘the tax code with 300 loopholes orchestrated by lobbyists needs to be simplified,’ and that the existing income tax system is a serious burden on both individuals and businesses. He also favors rational and enforceable limits on spending growth.
“Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Sean Pike’s perspective on government accountability is his belief in localism – that those things government must do should be done as close to home as possible. In that spirit he points out that ‘politicians can’t avoid you when they shop at the same local grocery store as you.’ He would take power out of Columbia and give counties and municipalities more influence, thus amplifying the voice of the people and making government more accountable to the will of the governed.
“Because of his commitment to liberty, limited government, and – importantly – honor and integrity, the Republican Liberty Caucus of South Carolina has concluded that among a field of strong candidates, Sean Pike rises above the rest. The constituents of Senate District 41 deserve a leader in the Senate that stands for nothing less than the highest standard of accountability and transparency while giving voice to the cause of freedom and limited constitutional government.”
